Curiosa a \u00eanfase posta no adjectivo \u201cmoderna\u201d j\u00e1 que para ilustrar as diversas etapas do jogo amoroso a cantora se socorreu de vers\u00f5es orquestrais de \u201cstandards\u201d, sobretudo dos anos 20, 30, 40 e 50 que, paradoxalmente remetem para os velhos filmes de Hollywood de uma Am\u00e9rica ainda inocente. Assim cl\u00e1ssicos como \u201cYou\u2019re my thrill\u201d, \u201cAt last\u201d, \u201cComes love\u201d, \u201cAnswer me, my love\u201d, \u201cDon\u2019t go to strangers\u201d, \u201cSometimes I\u2019m happy\u201d, \u201cDon\u2019t worry \u2018bout me\u201d, \u201cI wish I was in love again\u201d e o m\u00edtico \u201cStormy weather\u201d desfilam sob neons numa rua chuvosa onde se adivinham mil e um enredos de sedu\u00e7\u00e3o. No tema de abertura de \u201cBoth Sides Now\u201d, o registo vocal de Joni Mitchell remete de imediato para Billie Holiday\u201d no que poder\u00e1 ser encarado como uma homenagem a esta cantora cuja vida ficou marcada por m\u00faltiplos dramas amorosos. Dois dos temas, \u201cA case of you\u201d e o t\u00edtulo que nome ao \u00e1lbum levam a assinatura da pr\u00f3pria Mitchell, o mesmo acontecendo, como vem sendo h\u00e1bito nos seus \u00faltimos trabalhos, com as pinturas que decoram a capa.
