Jon French (antigo companheiro de Captain Beefheart), Fred Frith (guitarrista genial, compositor genial, produtor genial, fundador de grupos geniais como Henry Cow, Art Bears, Skeleton Crew, etc, enfim \u2013 um her\u00f3i), Henry Kaiser (guitarrista genial, com inclina\u00e7\u00f5es \u2013 como Frith, ali\u00e1s \u2013 para tratar a guitarra de forma pouco ortodoxa) e Richard Thompson (guitarrista genial, membro fundador dos Fairport Convention, movendo-se com todo o \u00e0-vontade entre as cenas folk e \u201cavant-garde\u201d, colaborando, por exemplo, com o inclassific\u00e1vel gordo dos Pere Ubu, David Thomas) juntaram-se para uma boa piada que acabou por resultar brilhante. Rock\u2019n\u2019roll, \u201cpastiches\u201d de m\u00fasica chinesa, \u201csurfin\u2019 USA\u201d, de Chuck Berry, jazz paran\u00f3ico, vale tudo, num \u201ccocktail\u201d explosivo de humor delirante, virtuosismo instrumental e can\u00e7\u00f5es de se lhes tirar o chap\u00e9u. Tr\u00eas anos depois, o quarteto tornou-se mais sisudo. Os \u201cquatro da vida airada\u201d levaram-se a s\u00e9rio e acabaram por fazer um disco \u00e0 beira do rock \u201cmainstream\u201d.
