OS ARTISTAS VÃO ONDE O POVO ESTÁ (com António Curvelo)
MILTON NASCIMENTO

Domingo, 30 de Junho, 22h. Campo Pequeno. A Pat Metheny, já lhe chamaram “futurista moderado”. O guitarrista, um dos maiores de jazz dos anos 80, volta a tocar, desta vez em Lisboa, com Milton Nascimento, o cantor que levou o Brasil à terra de Metheny e que dá, agora, voz aos índios da Amazónia. Mais uma coincidência: ambos vão tocar a solo no Porto: primeiro, o brasileiro, depois será a vez do americano



“Todo o artista tem de ir aonde o povo está” – a afirmação pertence a Milton Nascimento e serve para definir uma atitude perante a arte e avida que, no seu caso, significam uma e a mesma coisa. Milton Nascimento, (voz militante das minorias, negra, índia, ou dessa raça em vias de extinção que é a humanidade), nasceu no Rio de Janeiro, há 49 anos, onde foi adoptado por uma família que o ensinou a partilhar “os campos e os rios, um céu belo não poluído e os jogos que as crianças de hoje não conhecem mais”. Percebe-se que nunca perdeu essa inocência, quando se ouve a voz sussurrar segredos, imensamente terna.
No Estado de Minas Gerais, forma, com Wagner Tiso, o grupo vocal “Luar de Prata” e diverte-se na rádio a fazer de “disc-jockey” ou de “crooner” em bailes populares, integrado nos “W’s Boys”. Wagner ajuda-o a transitar do rock para o jazz. Da voz, diz Elis Regina que “se Deus cantasse com toda a certeza o faria usando a voz de Milton Nascimento”.
Eumir Deodato, percussionista de jazz-rock, leva-o pela primeira vez, em 1968, aos Estados Unidos, para a gravação do álbum “Courage”, com Hubert Laws e Herbie Hancock, dois “jazzmen” conceituados. Hancock fica fascinado com a música do “negrão” cuja voz “parece vir de um lugar misterioso”, envolvendo todos “com o calor do sentimento humanop”. Milton, por seu lado, não resiste a introduzir no seu trabalho o verniz das grandes orquestrações, típico da “maneira de fazer” americana. Regressado a um Brasil então prenhe de mudanças sociais e políticas, grava “Clube da Esquina” (1972), prenunciando a obra-prima que o lançaria como embaixador da música brasileira no mundo: o duplo álbum “Milagre dos Peixes”, editado em 1973, com a colaboração do grupo “Som Imaginário”, do qual faziam parte, entre outros, Wagner Tiso e Nivaldo Ornelas. Nele, Milton, “porta-voz de todos quantos não têm possibilidade de se expressarem”, canta “os sonhos, as esperanças, angústias e frustrações do povo, a sua coragem e a sua força”. O suficiente para a censura proibir as letras. Mais permissiva, a América das patacas abre-lhe definitivamente as portas. “Native Dancer”, com o saxofonista Wayne Shorter, junta num discurso jazzístico a luminosidade da voz à negritude do sertão.
Acredita que “há um modo, ainda, de dizer a verdade: com o violão”, doa a quem doer: A verdade da atureza destruída pelo homem, a verdade do negro exilado e humilhado, a verdade do ódio, a verdade do amor”. “A arte é o caminho da liberdade” – afirma, com convicção lúcida da “Sentinela” que guarda os caminhos do mundo. Em “Missa dos Quilombos”, álbum de 1980, gravado ao vivo na igreja de Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homens, em Minas Gerais, celebra a morte e a ressurreição do povo negro, comparando-as à Paixão de Cristo.
O seu empenhamento político, ao lado da oposição contra o autoritarismo vigente, está bem patente nas obras “Paixão e Fé” (1985) e “Encontros e Despedidas” (1986) e na canção “Coração de Estudante”, transformada em hino do “Movimento para a democracia”. Tempo de luta, prosseguindo em “Barca dos Amantes” ao lado de outro resistente, o português Sérgio Godinho.
“Yauraté” (1987) assinala o apelo irresistível da selva amazónica e o abraçar de uma causa vital para o futuro do planeta. Participação especial de Paul Simon que retribui, convidando Milton para as festividades de “Rhythm of the Saints”. Finalmente, em 1989, “Txai” e a viagem colectiva ao “coração da luz”, subida do rio Jurua até à nescente e à música primordial dos índios Waipai, Kayapo e Surui. Reencontro com a pureza edénica de quem “se expressa através de tudo o que faz e não sabe fingir” – “eu cantava para eles e eles cantavam para mim. As crianças falavam com a lua e com as estrelas e nós tínhamos de formular os nossos desejos”. O de Milton Nascimento passa por devolver ao mundo a “humanidade perdida”.
Milton traz consigo ao Coliseu de Lisboa: Ronaldo Silva (percussão), Robertinho Silva (bateria), Vanderlei Silva (percussão), Túlio Mourão (teclados) e João Baptista (baixo).
